Ruth studied Classics at Oxford University and turned her love of research into helping Queen and country with a job as Intelligence Analyst for GCHQ. Her aspirations didn't stop there though, Ruth wanted to work for MI-5. Not as a glamorous field agent but doing the same thing that she was always good at. Research and finding the answers to questions. MI-5 allowed her to do that on a much larger scale and against the clock. Unfortunately, the only way she could get a transfer was if she agreed to be a mole, giving GCHQ information on what MI-5 was doing. Ruth reluctantly agreed.

She put off as long as she could feeding them information, but in the end gave them a little something. That little something was noticed and traced back to her by Tom Quinn. Instead of turning her in, he recognized the asset that she was and turned her into a double agent so to speak. Ruth officially began to work for MI-5 after that, keeping her contacts within GCHQ.

Over the years Ruth became a valued resource helping to solve many cases of counter-terrorism with her intelligence gathering. Unfortunately, it came to an end when she was caught in a frame up for murder. It turned out to be a cover up of government sponsored torture to get more information from terrorists. Ruth ultimately faked her death and was exiled from service, leaving Harry Pearce still in charge of MI-5 where he could do the most good.
